Careers in health information management are among the most varied and rapidly expanding in the healthcare field. These professionals control, organize, and disseminate information and help other health professionals locate and obtain data needed for patient care, research, and decision making.

Hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices and other healthcare facilities set up permanent medical records on each patient. a medical record contains the patient's history, physical exam results, x-ray and laboratory tests, doctor's orders, treatment plans, and other important information. Increasingly, this information is stored electronically, requiring information technology professionals with extensive experience in complex computer systems and security policies.

Professionals who handle patients' private health information are responsible for maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of that information. These professionals must be knowledgeable about the rules and regulations related to protected health information.
