Nursing informatics professionals apply information technology to the skills and work of nurses in healthcare. They integrate the fields of nursing, computer technology and information science to enhance the quality of the nursing practice. Nursing informatics professionals search for ways to simplify, shorten and enhance the documentation in health practices by using advanced computer and information technologies. These systems enable the appropriate flow of data collection and improve access to patient information at the point of care. A nurse informatics professional will also work with other nurses to identify and assist in training on computer systems used in patient information management. In addition to improving the patient-nurse interaction, these professionals also help a practice to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Areas of Specialization

Often a nurse informatics specialist manages or provides direction for the development and requirements for clinical systems to include hardware and software needs, and database content and management. They also may provide on-site technical support to facilitate installation of electronic records systems and provide training to clinicians at a site. A nurse informatics specialist may also maintain all mandatory compliance training and documentation that may be required by an institution or organization.

Work Environment

Nurse Informatics specialists can work in a hospital, healthcare setting or research institution. Increasingly these professionals are utilized by health-related consulting firms, vendors and suppliers.
