Length of Training/Requirements
Four colleges in Texas offer accredited mortuary science programs that require two years of study leading to an Associate Degree in Applied Science. State law requires that professionals follow academic training with a one-year apprenticeship and pass the state and national examinations. Most mortuary science programs lead to an associate degree although some certificate programs are offered in Texas at proprietary schools. Courses taken at proprietary schools may not be transferable to other institutions.

Licensure/Certification

After completing academic and apprenticeship requirements, prospective funeral service personnel must pass state and national exams. Practitioners are required to earn at least sixteen hours of continuing education credits every two years to maintain licensure. Individuals may be licensed as funeral directors, embalmers, or both, depending on the portion of the national exam they choose to take.
