Length of Training/Requirements
There are two levels of training: 2 years for veterinary technician (usually leading to an associate's degree) and 4 years for veterinary technologist. Clinical experience in a veterinary practice is required for all students in programs accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Most states have regulations for a veterinary technician's certification, registration, or licensure. Veterinary technicians may specialize in three areas - emergency critical care, anesthesia, and dental. Each requires specialty training beyond the Vet Tech certification as well as a comprehensive examination. Continued education is also required for the certified technician.

Licensure/Certification
To qualify to take the State Board Exam and become a Registered Veterinary Technician, one must have graduated from a two-year AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program.
