Length of Training/Requirements
To work in Texas, athletic training positions require at least a Bachelor's degree (including specified coursework related to athletic training) from an accredited college or university, and completion of an apprenticeship program in a university sports program with a minimum of 1800 clock hours of experience. To practice in all other states, one must have at least a Bachelor's degree from an entry level athletic training education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). CAATE accredited athletic training education programs can be found in most states and at both the Bachelor's and Master's degree level.

Licensure/Certification
In order to practice as an athletic trainer, one must pass a state or nationally administered credentialing exam. For the State of Texas, one must pass a licensing examination administered by the Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers and the Texas Department of State Health Services. To practice in all other states except Texas, an individual must pass the national certification exam administered by the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC). To be eligible for either of these examinations, an individual must meet the requirements mentioned above and maintain current certification in first aid and emergency cardiac care (ECC).

Educational Programs
The following programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Please check the CAATE website for the most current list of accredited athletic training education programs. Additionally, some colleges and universities not listed here may be able to prepare students to sit for the Texas Licensure exam, but not the BOC exam.
