A polysomnographic technologist performs the tests used by physicians to assess and diagnose sleep-related disorders like narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and insomnias. They operate a variety of electronic monitoring devices to assess and record brain activity, muscle and eye movement, respiration and blood oxygen levels. Technologists also help evaluate treatment methods for sleep disorders.


Work Environment
Polysomnographic technologists may work in neurology departments at hospitals, clinics, physician offices, laboratories, medical centers, psychiatric facilities, and free-standing sleep study centers. With experience, they may assist with research. Polysomnographic technologists obtain and review medical histories, attach electrodes to the patient’s scalp and body, observe and document a patient’s clinical condition, communicate with friends/family of the patient and other healthcare personnel, and prepare detailed written reports for the acting physician. They may keep records, schedule appointments, order supplies, provide instruction to less experienced technologists, and assume responsibility for the upkeep of equipment.
