Biotechnologists use living cells and materials to make products that are useful to our society.  A biotechnologist works in a lab to develop new products or processes involving genetic engineering.  They may design new drugs and medical treatments that help cure diseases such as cancer, AIDS, and the common cold.  Biotechnologists can also work in forensics and analyze DNA.  A biotechnologist involved in research typically needs a bachelor of science degree.  Depending on the level required in the lab, an advanced degree may be required.  Research could be related to agriculture, biology, genetics or medicine. 

Areas of Specialization
There are many different areas of specialization in biotechnology.  Biotechnologists use forensic testing in criminal investigations to determine the perpetrator of a crime by taking samples of hair, body fluids, or skin and comparing the DNA found to that of the suspected person.  DNA fingerprinting is used in paternity testing.  They can help to manage wildlife populations and endangered species.  They may also be involved in waste management, energy production or veterinary medicine.  Drug design and development, sales, business and law are other career options.

Work Environment
Biotechnologists may work in academic research centers, medical centers and in commercial industry.  Biotechnologists may hold positions in research and development, quality control, clinical research, manufacturing and production, regulatory affairs, information systems, marketing and sales, and administration.
