Demographers study the makeup, distribution, and trends of community populations.  They are sometimes called population sociologists and often make observations about the cause and effects and increases or decreases in birth rates or immigration. Demographers   collect statistical data, analyze it to identify patterns and then predict trends for the future. These predictions are often used to help governments, social service agencies and companies make long-term plans.

Areas of Specialization
They may specialize in areas that relate to human populations such as health, housing, education, family characteristics, agriculture, economics or immigration and naturalization. Other titles for Demographers are Data Analyst, Population Analyst, Data Research Analyst, Social Demographer and Statistical Demographer. They may also have a degree in urban planning, anthropology, epidemiology, mathematics, actuarial science, geography and sociology.

Work Environment
Entry-level Demographers may conduct field work conducting interviews or testing census work, and they usually spend a large amount of time working with computers. They may work for government agencies, corporations, hospitals, universities, news organizations, market research and planning consultancies.
