A career in Biostatistics consists of developing information that describes the overall health and wellbeing of a population. Biostatisticians design studies, evaluate new treatments, assess the safety and effectiveness of medications, and educate people about environmental issues. Biostatisticians perform data collection and analysis and apply study designs to assess disease risk factors and the effects on individuals and populations.  People who want pursue this career should have a strong interest and background in mathematics, computers and medical, biological or health sciences.


Work Environment

Biostatisticians often work as part of a team of scientists which may include physicians, epidemiologists, health policy analysts, computer programmers and other health professionals. They work for state and local health departments, governmental health-related agencies, private sector, biopharmaceuticals and education and research institutions.
