A Nursing informatics professional looks for ways to simplify, shorten and enhance the documentation in health practices by using advanced computer and information technologies. They can enhance the quality of patient care by working with other nurses to identify and assist in training on computer systems used in patient information management. These professionals also help a practice to reduce costs and improve efficiency. This nursing specialty brings together the nursing discipline with that of information technology and computer science.

Areas of Specialization

Often a nurse informatics specialist manages or provides direction for the development and requirements for Clinical Systems to include hardware and software needs, and database content and management. They also may provide on-site visits to facilitate installation of electronic records systems and provides in-service to clinicians at a site. A nurse informatics specialist may also maintain all mandatory compliance training that may be required by an institution or organization.

Work Environment
Nurse informatics specialists can work in a hospital, healthcare setting or research institution. Increasingly these professional are utilized by health-related consulting firms, vendors and suppliers.
