Substance abuse (or chemical dependency) counselors help assess and treat drug and alcohol addiction. They counsel individuals who are addicted to drugs or alcohol, helping them to identify behaviors and problems related to their addiction. They also provide intervention and prevention services, as well as family counseling. These counselors may hold sessions for individuals, families, or for groups of people. They may also speak to individuals or groups about the dangers of such addictions.

Work Environment
Substance abuse counselors work in residential facilities where those addicted to drugs and alcohol live while undergoing treatment as well as in out-patient settings. They may also work for hospitals, correctional institutions, and other drug treatment centers. They usually work a 40-hour week, but working on weekends and holidays may be necessary depending on the setting.
