A diagnostic medical sonographer uses high-frequency sound waves from ultrasound equipment to generate an image for assessing and diagnosing various medical conditions. Diagnostic medical sonographers, also called ultrasonographers, operate the equipment that collects reflected echoes and forms the images that may be used for interpretation and diagnosis by physicians.

Sonographers explain the procedure to the patient, help the patient get into the position that is most suitable for providing the best view, and then perform the exam. Sonographers use a transducer, which transmits sound waves in a cone- or rectangle-shape. They may also spread a special gel on to the skin to help in the transmission of the sound waves.

Areas of Specialization
Sonographers may specialize in obstetrics and gynecology, abdominal sonography, neurosonography (the nervous system and the brain), ophthalmologic sonography (the eyes), and other areas.

Work Environment

Most sonographers work at hospitals, but some are employed in physicians’ offices or diagnostic imaging centers. If a sonographer works at a hospital, they may be asked to work nights or weekends.
