Diagnostic medical sonographers, also called ultrasonographers, operate the equipment that collects reflected echoes and forms the images that may be used for interpretation and diagnosis by physicians. Sonographers explain the procedure to the patient, help the patient get into the position that is most suitable for providing the best view, and then perform the exam. Sonographers use a transducer, which transmits sound waves in a cone- or rectangle-shape. They may also spread a special gel on to the skin to help in the transmission of the sound waves. |
