Rehabilitation counselors help people deal with the personal, social and vocational effects of any disabilities that they may have, whether the disability is from a birth defect, illness, accident or some other reason. Rehabilitation counselors evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each patient, and arrange for medical care, vocational training and job placement that is right for them. They work with both the individuals with disabilities and their families, and plan with physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists and employers to determine a plan that enables the individual to live as independently as they can.

Areas of Specialization
Rehabilitation Counselors may specialize in particular populations (such as children or adults) or in particular skill areas.


Work Environment
Rehabilitation counselors may work in hospitals, clinics, business and other workplaces, schools, and private practices.
