Prothestists are professional who provide patients with artificial limbs in order to replace an amputated limb.  They are responsible for all aspects of prosthetic care including:  measuring, designing, assembling, fitting, and adjusting of the prosthetic limb.

Orthotists are individuals who create orthoses or braces.  Orthoses are commonly used to assist with spine stability or after injury or disease to limbs.  Orthotists work at providing the patient with protection and support to improve function and mobility.

Areas of Specialization
Areas of specialization include myoelectric upper limb prostheses, cranial molding helmets and advanced technologies including functional electrical stimulation to enhance mobility.


Work Environment

After completing formal education, prosthetists and orthotists are able to work in a variety of places including:  hospitals, universities, or private clinics.   Many individuals in this field also choose to open their own practices.  In addition, a practitioner in prosthetics and orthotics works with a variety of medical/health personnel including:  physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, case managers, and nurses
